Frequently Asked Questions

1. How do I know if therapy with your psychologist is right for me?

Therapy with your psychologist may be helpful if you feel stuck, overwhelmed, or notice repeating patterns in your life or relationships. Many people come after trying other approaches and wanting something deeper and more lasting. You don’t need to be in crisis — just open to reflection and change.

2. What is the difference between psychotherapy with a Psychologist and Cognitive Behaviour Therapy that I may have had in the past?

Therapy at FISP focuses on understanding the deeper emotional patterns that shape how you think, feel, and relate. Rather than offering quick strategies or symptom management alone, it works relationally and over time supports meaningful, long-term change.

3. How long does therapy at FISP take?

Therapy is not time limited. Some people attend for a shorter period, while others choose to work over a longer time. Sessions are usually held once per week. The length of therapy depends on your needs and goals and is reviewed along the way.

4. What happens in the first 2-3 sessions?

The first 2-3 sessions give you a chance to talk about what brings you to therapy and to see whether working together feels right. There is no pressure to share more than you’re comfortable with. You’re also welcome to ask any questions you may have. Your therapist will support you and check in with you with consideration and care.

5. Do I need a referral?

You do not need a referral to attend therapy privately. If you wish to access Medicare rebates, a referral and Mental Health Care Plan from your GP is required. We’re happy to talk this through with you.

6. What if I don’t know what to say?

Many people feel unsure about where to begin. You don’t need to prepare or have the right words. Therapy is a place where understanding and language develop over time, at your pace.

7. What if I need to cancel or change my appointment?

We ask for 48 hours’ notice to cancel or reschedule an appointment. No explanation is required.

48 hours’ notice or more: no charge

24–48 hours’ notice: 50% of the session fee

Less than 24 hours’ notice or non-attendance: 100% of the session fee

If you become suddenly unwell or a legitimate and unexpected issue arises, no cancellation fee will be charged.

If an appointment is missed due to forgetting, changing your mind, or double-booking yourself, the full fee applies.

Please note that Medicare rebates cannot be claimed for cancelled or missed appointments.

You don’t need to have the right words before you begin — therapy is where the words are slowly found.
